In September 2020 I had the chance to join the Summer School, organised by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Universität Hamburg, on the topic ‘Construction and Power of Narratives in Conflict-Loaded Societies: Polarization and/or Transformation’. This week-long school consisted of daily lectures, exercises, and discussions. Unfortunately, it had to take place online, but nonetheless a week full of discussion, new insights, and connection.
There were two topics that stood out to me the most. First of all, whether we should allow offensive opinions into academic discussion when it comes to topics such as racism and identity. This was a complicated conversation that caused some discomfort, but the beauty within this Summer School was it allowed room for this and everyone present was willing to face it.
The second topic that stood out was that of identity. Professor Halleh Ghorashi talked about her research on the perception of immigrants in the Netherlands. This led to discussions on the role of language in shaping our perception of the ‘Other’ and the unconscious influences involved.
The most important thing for me during this week were the people. Even though I had never met most of them in person I felt a strong connection to all, mostly due to the openness and vulnerability with which everyone approached the discussions. All in all, it was a very insightful and inspiring week. Although I won’t be a PTR student anymore by the time the next Summer School takes place, I truly hope I will get the chance to join again!
