A journey to discover meaning in a new country
Five voices create a conversation on rootedness and spirituality. Moving their hands between the Philippines, Australia, Iran, Japan, Colombia and Argentina, how do they find meaning in the Netherlands?
Synopsis
Five people from different cultural backgrounds are invited to share stories, places and feelings about their roots and spiritual meaning making. They reflect on this through talking about the transition from their home country to their life in the Netherlands. The stories are told in informal encounters at the participants’ homes. Themes of these conversations are aspects of uprootedness – happiness, spirituality, religion, roots and meaning making. The interviews are directed by a set of guiding questions (see Appendix A). The documentary braids these conversations into one comprehensive story, told through the hands of the interviewees. Through a poetic lens, a collective journey of uprootedness and faith is shaped, showing both the common denominators, as well as the largely diverging experiences that starting a life in the Netherlands can entail.
